THE Enchiridion

    • Yes. Most garden ornaments require a stable, level base to prevent shifting or damage over time.

      Suitable foundations may include:

      • Concrete pads
      • Compacted gravel or crushed stone
      • Large stepping stones

A stable footing prevents settling, tilting, or winter frost heaving.

  • The base should extend several inches beyond the footprint of the ornament. This helps distribute weight evenly and prevents the object from sinking or tilting.

    • This is not recommended. Soil can shift, erode, or become unstable during wet seasons or freezing weather.

A prepared base ensures the piece remains level for years to come.

Planters & Drainage

  • Drainage prevents water from collecting inside the container. Standing water can damage plants and may cause containers to crack during freezing weather.

  • It is best to elevate terracotta containers slightly using pot feet or risers.

This allows airflow beneath the pot and prevents moisture from becoming trapped underneath.

  • Many fountains are designed so that the components stack together using gravity rather than bolts. This allows them to be disassembled easily for maintenance or relocation.

  • Common causes include:

    • Low water level
    • Debris blocking the pump intake
    • Kinked tubing
    • Electrical connection issues

Ensuring the pump remains fully submerged is critical for proper operation.

Materials & Aging

  • Why does stone sometimes develop white marks?

This phenomenon is called efflorescence, a natural mineral deposit that can appear as moisture moves through stone or concrete.

It is harmless and often fades over time.

  • Yes. Exposure to weather, water, and sunlight will gradually create a natural patina.

There is unique appreciation for this aging process as it gives objects character and depth and story.

  • We recommend finding local installers, landscapers, or stone professionals who can assist with placement and installation.

Large garden ornaments may require multiple people or mechanical assistance to move safely.

Fountains

  • Most garden fountains are self-contained systems that recirculate water using a submersible pump.

They simply require an electrical outlet to operate.

  • Fountain pumps should always be connected to a GFI-protected outdoor outlet for safety.

  • In climates where temperatures drop below freezing, fountains should be protected during winter.

Water expands when frozen and can crack stone basins or bowls.

    Before freezing weather arrives:

    • turn off and unplug the pump
    • drain the fountain completely
    • remove the pump and store it indoors

Some fountains can remain outdoors if they are fully drained and covered.

  • Common causes include:

    • Low water level
    • Debris blocking the pump intake
    • Kinked tubing
    • Electrical connection issues

Ensuring the pump remains fully submerged is critical for proper operation.

  • Because fountains circulate standing water, algae growth may occur over time.

    To minimize algae:

    • change water periodically
    • keep fountain clean
    • use fountain-safe algaecide if necessary

Shaded fountains generally develop algae more slowly than those in full sun.

Winter Protection

  • Many stone and terracotta containers can remain outdoors if they are properly prepared.

However, drainage holes must remain clear to prevent water accumulation.

  • Yes. Fountains should be emptied and protected from freezing temperatures.

Water expands when it freezes and can crack bowls or basins.
